WEEK 20 – DAY 5

RIVERS OF LIVING WATER

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:38

A river, even a quiet one, is in motion. It flows either gently or rapidly over rocks and around trees. The point is that it is not stagnant. A pond can become stagnant with algae forming and bacteria breeding, and eventually, if there is no rain it can easily dry up. A river is often fed by melting snow of mountains and rain farther upstream. Therefore, a mighty river is much less likely to become stagnant or dry up. A river is constantly moving toward a destination, the mouth of the river where it flows into the sea. The Holy Spirit is a river flowing through the life of a believer. He does not stop at quenching the thirst of the believer but flows in and through that person to influence others. This is an evidence that Jesus has taken a stagnant, smelly life, and make it fresh and new. What does the flowing of the Holy Spirit in our lives look like? It looks like the Fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” As we grow in the grace of our Lord, these attributes will increasingly flow through us and overflow into the those whose lives we touch and influence. Let the River flow!

Father, please cause Your Holy Spirit to flow in our lives in such as way that the attributes of Jesus are more and more manifest in the way we talk, the way we work, and especially the way we treat others. Keep us from ever quenching the flow of the Holy Spirit.
