WEEK 11 – DAY 5

HAPPINESS FOR THE HUMBLE

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. Psalm 37:11

Let us begin by defining “blessed.” According to The American Dictionary of the English Language, 1828, by Noah Webster, blessed means “enjoying spiritual happiness and the favor of God.” Now, just who are the “meek?” We particularly liked Matthew Henry’s explanation of the word: “The meek are those who quietly submit to God; who can bear insult; are silent, or return a soft answer; who, in their patience, keep possession of their own souls, when they can scarcely keep possession of anything else.” We see here that those who are meek exhibit the traits of humility, patience, and self-control. They are humble toward both God and their fellow men. They wait patiently for the Lord to elevate them instead of complaining. They exercise self-control in their dealings with others and toward God when they cannot understand why He is allowing certain things in their lives. What do they inherit? They inherit an appreciation for the earth as it is, seeing not just its fallen state but the fact that it is still God’s gift to provide our needs. They will see the positive of God’s hand on their lives rather than the negative, glass half-empty perspective. More than that, the meek inherit the peace of God that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7) even while living with the day to day problems of our earthly lives. Most importantly, the meek, those who humble themselves before God and accept His free gift of salvation, will inherit the New Earth—the perfect earth on which we will dwell with Christ forever. Blessed (supremely happy) are the meek (the humble and self-controlled), for they will inherit the earth (the New Earth filled with the Light of Jesus). Hallelujah!

Father, help us to humble ourselves before You because in our natural state we are prideful. Thank You that when we submit our lives to Your control, we have the promise that we inherit the New Earth, the place that Jesus is preparing for us. (John 14:2).
