OVERCOMING THE WORLD

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who lovesG25 the Father also lovesG25 those born of Him. By this we know that we loveG25 the children of God: when we loveG25 God and keep His commandments. For this is the loveG26 of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome, because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

1 John 5:1-4 (BSB)

Everyone who believes Jesus is the promised Messiah, the anointed One, is now a member of the family of God. God drew us to have that faith-that trust in Jesus-by His lovingkindness. If we love Jesus, we will love the Father who sent Him and all those who are children of God by being born again—receiving God’s gift of grace purchased on the cross by Jesus. What is the proof of our love for the Lord and our brothers and sisters in Christ? Keeping God’s commandments. The commandments of God are relational. They involve right relationship with the Lord and with each other. Yes, Jesus died to purchase our redemption because we were incapable of keeping the commandments perfectly. However, now that His Holy Spirit indwells us, we are being made more and more like Christ. We are empowered to obey God. We are overcomers because His Holy Spirit enables us to say “no” to the world and “yes” to the Lord as He reveals His will and His ways through His word. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world, and faith is ours because God first loved us.

Do you want to be an overcomer? Do you want to live victoriously even amid the struggles of life on this fallen earth? Love God. Love His children. Demonstrate this love of God by obeying His commandments. Put feet to your faith and live each day victoriously in His Grace to the Glory of God.

Father, help us to be overcomers by exercising our faith and loving Your forever family. Help us to remember that Your Holy Spirit lives in us, and therefore, we are no longer slaves to sin but victors over it!
