GRATITUDE FOR GOD’S DELIVERANCE
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.
Psalm 107:8, 15, 21, 31
This Psalm was probably written after the Israelites had been brought back from captivity (see Psalm 107:3). The repeated phrase above urges those who have been delivered to give thanks to the Lord. Several scenarios where thanksgiving is warranted are presented:
- Those wandering in the desert, “For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things” (Psalm 107:9)
- Prisoners in afflictions and chains, “For He has broken down the gates of bronze and cut through the bars of iron” (Psalm 107:16)
- Those who suffered affliction because of sin, “He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit.” (Psalm 107:20)
- Those tossed about in stormy seas, “He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed” (Psalm 107:29)
Have you ever been thirsty for the Lord? Have you ever felt imprisoned by your past or your sin? Have you ever felt a physical problem was a direct result of disobedience? Have the storms of life tossed you to and fro until you feel battered and beaten? In the scenarios above, the common thread was that these people called upon the name of the Lord, and He heard their cries. You, too, can cry out to Jesus, and He will hear you and deliver you. Then you can join in the chorus of people throughout the ages whom God has delivered by saying “give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonders to the sons of men.”
Father, we have placed our trust in Jesus, our Deliverer, and give You thanks for Your loving devotion in sending Him to take our place upon the cross, die in our place, and be raised from the dead to ever intercede for us before Your throne. We are grateful for deliverance from sin, from sickness, from cares of this world. We thank You that we are covered by the righteousness of Christ and washed by His blood to stand before Your throne as those who have been redeemed.
